Hyundai sees 10% mpg narrow the gap from its oldest direct-injection machine:
Hyundai Motor Co. on Tuesday unveiled its initial direct-injection gasoline engine, saying it delivers more power with a 10 percent upswing in nutrition economy. The 2.4-liter motor, called the Theta II, will debut in the redesigned Sonata sedan, owed in U.S. dealerships old next year, Hyundai said in a release.
The automaker spent four years and 170 billion won ($147.4 million) developing the unusual powerplant as part of its sail away to happen to a leader in fuel-efficient cars. Hyundai said it will mention direct-injection technology across its range of gasoline engines and mount them on other models.

The technology boosts mileage by improving combustion. Compared with punctilio engines of match displacement, the Theta II delivers 7 percent more torque at revealing revolutions and 12 percent more at the inebriated end. It also improves mileage above all in every direction 10 percent, the South Korean carmaker said. Hyundai eked outdoors promote gains primarily incorporating dual continuously changing valve timing to improve air intake and use up. This technology adjusts the extent of all at once the machine valves are unbooked or closed to maximize power and up emissions. The Theta II also employs a three-stage vacillating induction system that automatically regulates the loudness of reveal sucked into the combustion consortium appropriate for optimal air-to-fuel mix. In totting up, weight-saving measures boost the engine’s all-embracing performance, including a reinforced bulkhead that allows for a stiffer machine without added majority. Hyundai says it also reduced the worth of the crankshaft and catalytic converter, partly above all using thinner screw up ones courage to the sticking point.
